17th Commonwealth Table-Tennis Championships, Jaipur, India, 30th May to 5th June 2007.

 

Rebecca Russell, Corinna Whitaker, Catherine Symons and Natasha Milliken travelled to Jaipur, India where the championships were held at the SMS Indoor Stadium.  The overall standard of play was very high top teams in the ladies section were represented by Singapore, Malaysia, India and New Zealand.

 

In the team event Scotland were drawn against Malaysia, Nigeria and Bangladesh.  Scotland came 3rd in the group losing to Malaysia and Nigeria their 3rd match against Bangladesh was a walk over.

 

SCOTLAND 0 – 3 MALAYSIA

 

Rebecca Russell lost to Sock Khim NG  0-3     6-11, 6-11, 7-11.

Corinna Whitaker lost to Lei Wei BEE   0-3     3-11, 6-11, 4-11.

Catherine Symons lost to Soo Jin CHIU 0-3    6-11, 2-11, 6-11.

 

NIGERIA 3 – 0 SCOTLAND

SCOTLAND AGAINST BANGLADESH WALK OVER.

 

Scotland then went into the second stage groups playing for positions 9 -13.

Scotland finished in 11th position overall as they beat Maldives and Pakistan. Scotland lost to Wales and had their chance to beat South Africa as at one stage all 3 players were 2-1 up in sets but lost out in the end.

LADIES SINGLES

 

Rebecca, Corinna, Catherine and Natasha all took part in the ladies singles and played in the qualification groups.  The 15 groups consisted of 3 players the winners of each group would then progress to the last 32.  Rebecca and Corinna both came 2nd in their group both beating players from the Maldives.  Rebecca lost out to Madhurika Patkar of India and Corinna lost to Edem Offiong of Nigeria.  Natahsa came in 3rd position losing out to Ogundele Ganiat of Nigera and Mamta Prabhu of India.  Catherine beat Fathmath Ifaga from Maldives and had a walkover against May (Yuen-Wern) Cho of Australia due to injury.  Catherine then progressed to the last 32 where she played Poulmi Ghatak of India who proved to strong and won 4 – 0. 

 

DOUBLES

 

The doubles event was played in a knock out basis with Rebecca and Corinna playing first against LI Karen & Yang Annie (Jiang) of New Zealand.  The girls played well and it was a closely fought match Rebecca and Corrina were unlucky to lose 3 -1.  Catherine and Natasha played against Edem Offiong & Cecilla Offiong of Nigeria they lost 3 – 0 playing better in the last end.

 

All 4 ladies enjoyed the event and gained valuable experience for the future.
